Have you been born again? Everyone is born into sin, passed down from Adam and Eve. Because we're born into sin, our sin debt must be dealt with before we can have eternal life and a relationship with God. Jesus, the Son of God, said that He is the only way for man to be reconciled with God; He said, I am the way, the truth, the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me. Why? Because He's the only one who paid for your sins on the cross of Calvary, and the only one that could because He was Himself, sinless. The payment for sins, this eternal life, can be given to you freely through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
